How to make a special valentine gift for free

Nothing says you care about a person more than taking time and effort investing in a home-made valentine gift. Buying a card with a prewritten message appears generic beside a gift with a personal design and special touch. The object of your affection will appreciate the sentimental value of your original creative idea.

Valentines Day gives everybody a chance to show affection to the special people in their lives. It doesn't matter if the focus is on a romantic interest, a solid friendship, a co-worker or a relative, a home-made gift sends a unique message. In addition to the reward of making another person's day special, you gain the satisfaction of making a creation that represents your talent and your feelings. And, can you guess another benefit of a home-made gift? It is free!

You can make a one-of-a-kind gift with recycled material from around your house. With some planning and effort, the result might surpass the displays at the local card shop.  There are many appropriate items you can make at no cost.  From coupon books, to poetry displayed in a recycled frame, capturing your sentiments in a handmade creation is the ultimate personal gift.

Instructions
Step 1

Plan

Brainstorm a list of ideas for services/goods you could use for coupons. Keep it sentimental. For example, if the coupons are for a child you might give one night of a later bedtime or an extra hour of TV. For a teen a later curfew or making a favorite meal might be a good coupon. A spouse might like a free car wash, a coupon for home-made cookies, to do the laundry or a receive a backrub. An elderly person might appreciate a delivered meal or recycled magazines.

Step 2

Prepare

Gather materials needed to make coupon book. Basic items include tape, glue, paper, scissors, ribbon and a ruler. Search for scraps of fabric, old photographs you can cut apart, magazines to clip pictures or words, bottons, odd puzzle pieces, extra scrabble tiles, sequins, beads and any item you might use to design the cover of your booklet or decorate the coupons. Use the back of old posters or tagboard from school projects. Recycled tissue paper or gift bags, used bows and other giftwrap give extra options for your creativity.

Step 3

Production

Set up a work area and go through items you might consider to decorate booklet. Choose paper for the coupons. Decide on the size and shape of the coupon. Trace or fold paper to appropriate size and cut. Make sure all coupons are the same size.

Step 4

Production

Write your coupons in a first draft form in a notebook. Read it back to see if it makes sense to you. Check questionable spelling in a dictionary. When you are satisfied you have worded your gift item the way you want it, take one of the pages you cut and use a ruler to make a few straight lines. Then write the message for your gift. Sign it and include an expiration date or other personal messages to show your creative style and personality. Continue with coupons until finished writing.

Step 5

Decorate

Next choose the paper for the cover of your booklet. Fold or cut about an inch wider and longer than the coupon size. Here's your chance to give your gift a unique look. Decorate with a cutout from a photgraph, make a border by gluing on buttons, sequins, lace or beads. Cut letters from a magazine or use fabric or foil. Let your imagination go and design and decorate the cover. If space allows, decorate the coupons.

Step 6

Assemble

Stack the coupons and place inside cover. Make two or three small holes with scissor tip or paper punch. The size of the coupon booklet will determine the number of holes needed. Make sure the hole is lined up on cover and coupons. Thread ribbon, heavy string or yarn through the hole and tie. Use a binder ring or a clasp.Your home-made gift with a personal message is ready for special delivery.

Hi Ej... You have some really neat stuff here! It may be just the way I perceive negative space, but I did find that the images on the instructions being placed (left-right in seemingly random order, started L/R except for the last one? ) tended to throw the overall effect of the page off a
bit ?
The two images at the bottom are the same size but placed vertically at different heights, which perhaps throws it off (balance?) a bit. Again, it may be just the way I perceive it?
By the way, EJ.....you must be a total genius...Your inclusion of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's "how do I love thee" was not only sentimental and appropriate, but VERY clever SEO wise....great job!

Hi, EJ. Your zone is great, but I'm seeing some overlapping text that makes it hard to read some of the articles. The far right column is overlapping with the column next to it. Do you see that problem when you preview it? You might try removing the the big block at the bottom and see if that fixes the problem.

How to woo your special valentine

If you don't feel comfortable writing your own poetry, give a framed hand-written copy of this Elizabeth Barrett Browning poem to the person of romantic interest to you. It's known as the most famous love poem. Play some romantic music, read the poem aloud and make a home-made card. Poetry and music equal romance.

Read poetry aloud for a special gift

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
by Elizabeth Barrett Browning

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with a passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints, --- I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! --- and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.
